About Dr David Hemery CBE
He is perhaps best known for his days in sport, both as Olympic Champion and World Record Holder in the 400m hurdles (Mexico, 1968). In November 2011, David became the first Briton to be awarded the European Olympic Committee’s Laurel Award for services to sport.
Hemery was crowned Sports Personality of the Year for 1968 and later went into sports politics, becoming president of UK Athletics and then Vice-Chairman of the British Olympic Association.
Having won an Olympic gold medal in a world-record time and eight yards ahead of the competition, Hemery knows what it takes to reach your potential. He has a strong belief that there is a spark of greatness, something special and unique in everyone. For this reason, he created the Be the Best you can Be! Programme to enable young people to discover the unique potential within themselves and inspire, engage and empower them to pursue and fulfil their dreams, to realize their spark of greatness.
