What is Coaching? A Simple Answer

Coaching develops people from within, boosting performance through natural learning, engagement, collaboration and clear, meaningful goals.

What is Coaching?

Coaching is about helping people unlock their own potential so they can perform at their best. Our founder Sir John Whitmore explains that coaching helps people learn for themselves, using the natural ability we all have to learn, just like we learned to walk on our own.

This idea is similar to what Socrates believed: that wisdom comes from within. It is different from the old view that people are empty vessels to be filled. Today, we often compare people to acorns, each with the potential to grow into a strong oak. With the right support and guidance, this potential develops naturally from the inside.

A gardener protects and guides a young tree’s roots so it can grow deeper and stronger. In the same way, good coaching creates the right conditions for real, lasting growth. Wise leaders know that real development happens when they help people grow instead of just telling them what to do.

In the past, the impact of coaching was hard to quantify, largely because so few organizations embraced it fully. That has changed. As employee engagement has moved to the centre of business strategy, the core coaching skills of collaboration, meaningful goal-setting, delegation and accountability have moved with it. Coaching is no longer a peripheral development activity. It is how high-performing organizations work.
