The session took a refreshingly different
view of a key skills relevant to local government: coaching.

Coaching
is a powerful tool for developing leadership
and employee performance beyond the typical skill and motivational approaches
to professional development. Embedded in the process of on going
communication and relationship building it delivers practical, common sense approaches
to developing people and services, and is a powerful way of creating excellent
results.
David Hemery explained how performance coaching evolved and is
now a key skill applied in any organisation. Stephen Hopkins explained how Eversheds
has adopted the coaching approach to every aspect of its business and the positive
effect its had on its performance. Stephen Cirell showed how coaching is of value
to local government lawyers of every level in their pursuit of promotion, personal
development, increased performance, greater influence and improved efficiency.
