Principles of Coaching

The Core Principle

The core principle of coaching is self directed learning: Coaches believe that the coachee has all the knowledge they need.

In order to enable the client to access this knowledge, coaching use what we call the Six Principles of Effective Coaching

The Six Principles of Effective Coaching

Structure
Self Directed Learning

Challenge
Positive Feedback Client Led Forward
Focused

Self Directed Learning

We learn better when we discover things for ourselves. We like to create our own solutions rather than be told what to do. When a child learns to walk, all it needs is encouragement, not instruction. There is no blame in coaching; the client is likely to learn more from the actions they have not completed than those that they have.

Structure

Having a framework sets us free to use our creative powers and our intuition.

Challenge

We like to be challenged and stretched in a supportive environment. Coaches challenge their clients and move them forward

Positive feedback

Positive feedback builds confidence and makes us want to do more.

Client Led

The coach is in charge of the process, and the client is in charge of the content. If coaches get sucked into the content they are no longer helping the client. Good coaching is useful to the client rather than interesting to the coach.

Forward Focused

When we dwell on a problem, it gets bigger. When we focus on the solution, the problem becomes manageable and we find more energy to deal with it
