to add real value. This approach offers two important advantages: *
the flexibility to enter new markets as opportunities arise * the freedom
to respond to the special requirements of individual markets in the region and
around the world. Much trust, responsibility
and respect in our people Our company is run on the principle
of centralization of financial decisions
at the centre, and rather extreme delegation of operating authority to a number
of key managers at the individual company or business unit level.
Our
distinctive management style is key to our success. We provide individual businesses
with a balance between operating freedom, controls on risk limits and observance
of professional standards. It is designed to be non-hierarchical and encourages
a sense of ownership and entrepreneurial endeavour across the whole Group.
This
approach produces an occasional major mistake that might have been eliminated
or minimized through closer operating controls. But it also eliminates large layers
of costs and dramatically speeds decision-making. Because everyone has a great
